How difficult is it to start over?

Many women are in jail for low-level offenses, mainly drug possession. Female offenders use their incarceration as a time to get clean and refocus on life goals. Once released, many women find obtaining housing to be difficult. Under federal law, public housing authorities (PHAs) have the right to adopt policies that exclude individuals with criminal records from eligibility for housing and do so for as long as a decade or more post-conviction. The situation is even worse for individuals with drug convictions. Under federal law, PHA's must reject applicants who they believe to be current drug users. Write your local PHA to urge it to adopt admission policies that do not discriminate against individuals based on past non-violent criminal convictions and accommodate to women of all ethnicities!!
